Honor Flight Bay Area, October 2024

My dad called me in July. “Mike, I’m going to sign up for this trip to Washington D.C. It’s called Honor Flight. It’s a group of veterans and we all get a tour around D.C. for a few days. I’d like you to come with me as a guardian.” Done. The easiest ‘yes’ I’ve been able to make in a while. My wife and I sorted out the details (two kids under 4) and I was off. I took 4 batteries, a charger, a Fuji X-T3, a 23mm and 35mm. I could have left one behind and carried on. The goal was to create a story for my dad, of my dad. It evolved as the morning became the afternoon, became the evening. We stepped onto the flight quietly and as strangers. Before we crossed the Mississippi it was the chattiest flight I’ve ever been on, and the average age was 70! I don’t think anyone slept. The following is a series of images of my dad, Bill, and his experiences for 49 hours from SFO to Reagan in D.C. and back to SFO. Each of these images is a mini-story of my dad’s experience, and by extension, my experience of him and his adventure. It’s been a project rooted in love and admiration and I continue to edit and sequence this story into new forms (magazine, web, print…) to this day.
